“Light and Shadow” Acrylic Painting Course

  • Amanda Layre's Fine Art Studio 33 Union Street Doylestown, PA, 18901 United States (map)

Whether you’re a complete beginner, or you’ve painted before, but you want to level up your skills, this course is all about the fundamentals of art!

How do you create realistic paintings that look 3D?

By learning how to use VALUES!

Value in art is essentially how light or dark something is on a scale of white to black (with white being the highest value and black being the lowest value)

Believe it or not, value is more important than color to the design and success of a painting.

In this 8-week course, we will be going back to the basics and building a foundation by creating depth and a range of values with acrylic paint.

By the end of this course, you will have an understanding of the following concepts:

  1. Create a value scale to get a visual of the depth that can be achieved by mixing black and white paint.

  2. Sketch a sphere (an orange, in fact) with a range of values to create volume and the look of roundness. It’s all about creating three-dimensionality on a flat surface..

  3. Create value and depth in still life painting.

  4. See objects as a breakdown of shapes that create a map. When shadow and light are applied to the shapes, your painting comes to life.

We will be painting “en grisaille” – entirely in values of gray or another neutral grayish color.

I encourage you to purchase your own materials. Here is a link to all the materials that you will be needing for this course, and the projects that we will create.
